Fountain Hills: Golf, Arts, Culture, and the Night Sky
Situated on the northeastern edge of the Phoenix Valley at the southern end of the McDowell Mountains is Fountain Hills, a unique community devoted to the arts, golf, and the night sky, not to mention its famous fountain. If any town in the Phoenix Valley has a unique pedigree and vibe, it’s Fountain Hills. Its location on the metropolitan area’s periphery gives residents a sense of peace while also being close to shopping and the vibrant life that entices people to Arizona.
Fountain Hills slopes gently toward the McDowell Mountains, starting with an elevation of 1,520 feet at the famous fountain and rising to 3,190 feet on a spur of the McDowell Mountains on the town’s western border. This elevation allows Fountain Hills to be a few degrees cooler than Phoenix in the summer but also played a part in being named an International Dark Sky Community. Natural features like the McDowell Mountains, the McDowell Mountain Regional Park, and two adjacent native American nations shield the city from light pollution. The Fountain Hills Dark Sky Association has worked with the town council and staff to change outdoor lighting and sign ordinances to address light pollution and ensure that night lighting is low impact.
