Where to Start When Packing to Move?

Whenever you move, one of the tasks that take the most time and requires the most patience is packing all your belongings and doing it in time for when the moving truck arrives. Moving is stressful and so overwhelming, and part of the stress has to do with packing up the entire house.

If you are moving soon, then I am sure you feel your moving date is rapidly approaching. When you start packing, pack the things you use least frequently first. Put heavy items in small boxes and light items in big boxes. Keep a running inventory of everything packed in each box. That will make it easier to find things when you go searching for them. Take photos of any valuables and pack them separately. It’s smart to keep them with you during the move to keep them from getting lost. Color coding is the key to an organized move. Consider getting several different types of duct tape or labeling tape, and clearly mark each box on each side. Consider red for the kitchen, blue for the bathrooms, green for the living room, and purple for your bedroom.

Here are some great tips by real estate professionals who have been there!

Give Yourself Enough Time

The easiest way to move is by simply giving yourself enough time. Organize a packing timeline before moving day to ensure you are giving yourself plenty of time to pack your items efficiently without feeling overwhelmed. Waiting until the last minute to pack can lead to lost, damaged, or forgotten items. – By Matthew Kennedy, Medina NY Realtor®

• Tape
• Scissors
• Labels
• Boxes
• Markers
• packing foam or bubble wrap
• Packing paper

Packing Checklist

The most efficient way to pack for a move is to plan how and what to pack; create a packing checklist so you don’t forget anything. Review the contents of each room, checking the cabinets, furniture, closets, and under the beds to give yourself a better idea of the amount of stuff you have to pack. Part of the reason people are often overwhelmed with the packing process is that they don’t realize just how much stuff they own. – Kenny Raymond, Miami Luxury Real Estate Expert.

Save Essential Items for Last

Richard Mellon, Peoria AZ Home Expert says, The most efficient way to pack for a move is to save the essentials for last. Clothing, toothbrushes, hygiene products, grooming tools, medications, and electronics such as laptops and phones are all considered essential items, but they’re not the only ones. In any case, set essential items aside so you don’t accidentally pack them up before you’re ready to. Moving day is such a hectic time; by saving essential items for last, you can ensure that you know where they are so you don’t lose your mind trying to find these things during this transition.

It is important to start planning for a move long before the big day comes. Gather boxes and start making lists. Stay organized, and keep checking back to this checklist so you can stay on track.
